Dear Ms Rundall,

Thank you for your recent letter to Andrew Lansley about infant health and young child feeding.  I have been asked to reply on Mr Lansley’s behalf.

As you will know, the Department of Health is fully committed to promoting and encouraging breastfeeding and to the promotion of the

UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation in the NHS, which includes adhering to the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes.  The Department is also committed to ensuring that advice and information is available on the safe and effective use of infant formula where mothers choose not to breast feed.

I have shared your letter with the Department’s nutrition policy team, which has asked me to pass on its thanks for your letter and the Baby Feeding Law Group’s recent joint submission on Start4Life.

I hope it is also helpful if I note that to date there has been no commercial partner involvement with the Start4Life campaign and the Department would consult with stakeholders (such as the Baby Feeding Law Group's member organisations) on any potential partnerships or sponsorships.

I hope this reply is helpful.

Yours sincerely,

Adam Butler
